OUR HISTORY

Kadnook was conceived in 1963 after the gift, to Jill, by her Dad, of a beautiful yellow male Labrador Retriever. His name was STULYN BRUCE, ‘Bruce’ to his friends. He was sired by the top winning sire of the time Aust.Ch.Sportland Chum. He began the love affair with Labradors which is still burning bright all these years later. In 1969 the dream became a reality with the birth of the first Kadnook litter. KADNOOK was always going to be the prefix, it was the name of the property where Jill’s mother grew up near Edenhope, in the Western District of Victoria and it had always seemed the perfect prefix for Jill’s planned  kennel of versatile Labradors.

The aim of this breeding program has always been to produce multi purpose dogs with lots of “natural” working ability and retrieve drive, a love of the water and great game sense. Excellent temperament has always been of paramount importance as it is not possible to train dogs with faulty temperaments. At the same time, we have always wanted the quality and type of the breed to be retained. With this as our mission we have applied ourselves unreservedly to produce as even quality as is possible with sound minds in sound bodies.

The first KADNOOK show champion CH. KADNOOK THE CHIEFTIAN was titled in 1974 and our first Field Trial champion was made up in 1980, F.T.CH. KADNOOK THE HUNTRESS, then followed the Retrieving Trial champion in 1984, CH. KADNOOK THE PROPHET.  What then followed was all our dreams come true when in 1984 the outstanding KADNOOK THE PROPHET became a TRIPLE CHAMPION, Field, Show and Retrieving. Then his daughter completed her Obedience Championship, KADNOOK THE BLAKCAMEO OC, thus giving us titled dogs in all aspects of  competition.  There have followed regularly over the years, many champions in all four categories, as well as a DUAL CHAMPIONS and many multi titled dogs and bitches.

We have had a very strong commitment to screening for hips, elbows and eyes for many years and we are now reaping the benefit of our diligence. More recently, when testing became available, we have also been DNA testing for PRA and EIC and profiling all breeding stock for pedigree assurance.

Throughout our development we have also been involved in the progress of the breeding stock for both Guide Dogs Victoria and Australian Customs.
